There is no language called “Common” in Zerith, although there are several Human languages that fit the same role. Wherever rulebooks refer to Common, a player should substitute one of the following languages, depending on where they were raised:

  • Zerithian (Western Zerith)
  • Akamkap (Steppes)
  • Bedewe (Southern Desert)
  • Reisen (Eastern Zerith)
  • Wajin (Jangu Island)
  • Uchelcalon/High Blood (Gwellengardd/The Dark Lands)

The languages listed above are also valid to be learned as languages other than Common (for instance, bonus languages gained through background or class features). Other languages that can be learned include:

  • Elvish
  • Dwarvish
  • Kustmann
  • Orcish
  • Sylvan

Exotic languages are ordinarily not available as part of character creation. However, a character who is a wizard, or has the scholar background option, can learn one exotic language to start. As well, dragonkin characters start knowing Draconic. Exotic languages are:

  • Draconic
  • Infernal
  • Abyssal
  • Celestial
  • Primordial
  • Giant
  • Chern (ancient, extinct)
  • Dilisan (ancient, extinct)
  • Lisan (extinct)
  • Gammel (ancient, extinct)
  • Westron (extinct)
  • Ucheliaith (extinct)
  • Gen (ancient, extinct)
  • Genshin (ancient, extinct)
  • Shusi (extinct)

The language of the Drow cannot be learned by player characters.

Translating written text can be managed through several different spells, but there are limitations.
