Nearly six thousand years ago in Zerithian lands, omens and portents began to be noticed that warned of an impending doom. The wizard acknowledged by most to be the most powerful in the West, now known only as Terin, led the effort to figure out the best way to counter this threat. As part of that effort, the Council that Terin put together determined that the Zerithian people needed to be brought together to fight what seemed to be an invading army from another world. To effect this, Terin and Faithful Church Primate Valor of Winden together created (what eventually became known as) the Imperial Throne, a massive stone chair that is said to bestow enormous powers upon worthy leaders who risk sitting on it. Tradition has it that it was sitting on the Imperial Throne is how Erste Konin became the first Zerithian Emperor. It is also believed that anyone unworthy who sits on it will be destroyed, and indeed there are hundreds of tales of madmen who are certain that they are destined to become Emperor and are disintegrated when they try to sit upon it. Regardless of whether it made him Emperor, Konin subsequently made it law that anyone who survived sitting on the Imperial Throne was Emperor. And indeed, for the entirety of the First and Second Zerithian Empires, a reasonably orderly parade of Emperors were proclaimed after sitting on the Imperial Throne.
